The Apple app store is crammed full of gaming gems… but which ones are truly excellent and which would give you five minutes of pleasure followed by a groan that you parted with 99 cents and have nothing to talk about or show for it! Yes, many games on the iOS device are either free with in app purchases or a small price in comparison to buying a game on the DS or similar but which ones have you discussing it with your friends or buying the coordinating T-shirt… or desperately waiting for the latest update to release new levels. Here are my top ten gaming apps on iOS!
It has to be Angry Birds, whether you love the original version or more specialized like Star Wars it is certain to be addictive for any age group. I’ve seen 2 year olds up to 80 year olds ADDICTED! Yes, there are in app purchases if you want extra bombs etc. but you don’t need them, for $0.99 if you’ve not tried it yet, you simply must. There’s even a clothing range available owing to its popularity.
By far the BEST racing game for your iOS device is Real Racing 2, worth every cent of $4.99. The simulations are incredible, the detailing is awesome. A huge improvement from the original, simply addictive! You can even play it split screen on your TV through AirPlay!
Try out Bastion if you love an adventure game you can escape into during a hectic day. Priced at $4.99 this game was originally used with a controller and the transition to the iOS platform couldn’t be smoother. As the player you are one of the last survivors after the Calamity, you’ll slash and attack enemies set against incredible hand-painted backdrops! It is beautifully narrated and an enthralling experience to be part of. Surely the most loved modern board game, Carcassonne is also available and hugely enjoyed on the iPhone offering single or multiplayer options worldwide. Priced at $9.99 it also allows you in-player optional expansion sets.
Infinity Blade II at $6.99 is a successful sequel to its original, stunning rendered battles and strategic game play. Loads of in game of player customization in this 3D adventure quest, it also has social challenges and HDMI output support!
Plants vs. Zombies at $2.99 shows all you’ll need to ward off the invaders during the Apocalypse are seeds and a bit of clever thinking! It is a tower defense game where you use organic land mines and place pea-shooting plants in your virtual backyard and on surrounding rooftops to slow and slay the zombies. It’s addictive, fun and so clever.
A brilliant iPhone game which was originally a Wii game World of Goo at $2.99 is an addictive must-have. Solve puzzles by building structures made from sticky balls of goop. Using a tap-and-drag interface you build your towers to reach the target, the music keeps you engaged, simple yet original strategy game play.
The Walking Dead, surely the most gripping game out there at the moment, if you’ve seen the TV series you’ll want the game, costing $4.99 it uses the zombie outbreak to force you to make hard cutting choices, living with the outcomes. It looks like the original comics, but follows its own journey keeping you mesmerized! There are four additional episodes available for in-app purchase that adds to the gripping adventure.
Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation at $4.99 is all singing and dancing on the small screen of the iPhone! This is unmatched by most other apps. It also lets you have up to 12 players for unrivalled and addictive Internet play!
The game Tiny Wings at $0.99 has to get a mention in any top ten lists of iOS games, an absolute classic iPhone original. It may not appear on the top ten of your phone but check it out. With one touch game-play you build momentum by sliding up and down hills whilst launching birds, sending them flying into the setting sun. Check it out!
